Construction of West Maui hospital breaks ground

Construction on a new hospital has broken ground in West Maui.

West Maui Hospital and Medical Center will be a 25-bed hospital, and include a 24-hour emergency room, 40-bed skilled nursing facility and 40-unit assisted living facility.

A ceremony was held Monday, Aug. 15, on Kakaalaneo Drive, just mauka of Honoapiilani Highway in Lahaina.

“After many stops and gos over the last few decades, we finally are here for the groundbreaking ceremony,” said Howard Hanzawa, West Maui Hospital Foundation boardmember.

“Obviously we’re not a complete trauma center. We don’t have that capacity, however what we will do is in the event of an emergency, we can take you in, evaluate you, and then you can get treatment,” said Brian Hoyle, Newport Hospital Corp. president.

The hospital is expected to open in late 2018.
